"S" is for Service Learning: CSU schools across California are moving to make service an important part of higher education. The UC Service-Learning program is doing its best to combine classroom lessons with community experience. Though the reasons for student enrollment are varied, the outcome is overwhelmingly positive: from UC Senior Melissa Watkins, "It was meeting new people; it was giving back to the community, seeing something grow. All of those things just kind of contributed to my continued involvement in it." Some other good news? California State at Fresno has uncovered evidence that students enrolled in Service Learning have higher graduation rates.
